One of the simplest forms of meditation is mindful breathing, and it can be done right at home. The objective is to focus on your breath, acknowledging thoughts as they arise, but always returning your focus to the breath. Follow these simple steps for a basic daily meditation practice:

  1. Find a quiet and comfortable space: Choose a spot in your home where you feel at ease and where you're less likely to be interrupted. You could sit on a chair or a cushion on the floor, ensuring your posture is upright but relaxed.
  2. Set a timer: Especially when starting out, it can be helpful to set a timer. Start with short periods (5-10 minutes) and gradually increase the duration as you get comfortable with the practice.
  3. Close your eyes and focus on your breath: Pay attention to the sensation of inhaling and exhaling. Notice the rise and fall of your belly, or the feeling of the air entering and leaving your nostrils.

Practicing emotional awareness can be done with a simple daily exercise known as the "S.T.O.P" method. This exercise can be used whenever you find yourself in a stressful or emotionally charged situation, and it involves four steps:

  1. S - Stop: As soon as you recognize an emotional response, take a moment to pause whatever you're doing. This step is about creating a small gap to observe what is happening inside you.
  2. T - Take a breath: Close your eyes and take a deep breath. This will help calm your mind and bring your focus back to the present moment.
  3. O - Observe: Notice what is happening within you. What emotions are you experiencing? How does your body feel? Are your muscles tense or relaxed? Is your heart rate elevated? Try to step back and view these feelings and sensations without judgment.
  4. P - Proceed: After observing your emotional state, decide how to proceed. This could be choosing to respond in a calm and controlled manner, or it might involve removing yourself from a situation if it's triggering negative emotions.


Remember, it's not about suppressing or ignoring your emotions, but rather acknowledging them and dealing with them in a constructive and mindful manner. By practicing the S.T.O.P method regularly, you'll become more in tune with your emotional responses and triggers, enhancing your emotional awareness.


Overcoming Obstacles to Self-Awareness

Denial and Resistance

Acknowledging and accepting our weaknesses and vulnerabilities can be challenging. However, avoiding or denying these aspects only limits our growth potential. It's crucial to approach self-awareness with an open and non-judgmental mindset.


Recognizing denial or resistance to change brought about by increased self-awareness often requires introspection and honesty with oneself. You may be resisting change if you find yourself frequently rationalizing your actions or behaviors despite feedback to the contrary. Avoidance of difficult conversations, defensiveness when confronted with different perspectives, or continually blaming others for your circumstances are also potential signs of resistance. Ultimately, if you're experiencing discomfort or frustration when facing truths about yourself, it might indicate that you are in denial and resisting the change that comes with self-awareness. Recognizing a fear of change during the process of developing increased self-awareness can manifest in several ways. You might feel an inexplicable discomfort or anxiety when faced with new situations, or find yourself frequently craving familiarity and routine, demonstrating a subconscious resistance to change. Further signs could include procrastination on tasks that involve something new or different, and a tendency to create excuses to avoid such situations. You might also find yourself obsessively worrying about the potential outcomes of change. In some instances, physical symptoms such as insomnia, restlessness, or even nausea could indicate a fear of change. All these signs suggest a fear of the unknown which is integral to the fear of change. Recognizing these symptoms is the first step towards confronting and overcoming this fear, enabling further progress in the journey towards greater self-awareness.


External Distractions

Our fast-paced lives and the constant influx of external stimuli can distract us from self-reflection. Setting aside dedicated time for introspection and unplugging from devices can help us find the space needed for self-awareness.


External distractions are everyday occurrences that can divert our focus from introspection and self-awareness. They can be as simple as an incoming email, a buzzing smartphone, or the allure of social media. For instance, after a long day, you might choose to numb your mind by binge-watching a TV series rather than reflecting on the events of the day. Similarly, during times of emotional discomfort or stress, it might be easier to lose yourself in a video game or immerse yourself in endless scrolling through social media feeds. These are examples of using external distractions to avoid self-awareness. By focusing on these distractions, we can avoid confronting our emotions or acknowledging areas in our lives that may require change. These distractions provide a temporary escape from our thoughts and feelings, but they also hinder our personal growth and self-understanding.
